Michael's true intentions to be on the boat

I dont really think Michael is trying to redeem himself for anyone. He even points out his true intention himself "I'm here to die." After Tom told him the island wouldnt let him die and that he still had work to do, Michael probably figured the only way he would be able to finally kill himself is by doing what the island wants him to do.
