Island and Real World times.

Post by David3 »

OK, after about an hour debate, it seemed that you guys reluctantly settled on time running slower on the island than it does in the real world. Well...that creates a few problems.

First of all, we've has at least two instances where we've been shown that time on the island is the same as the rest of the world.

1. We know that the survivors of 815 are crashed on 9/22/04 real world time. We know that Desmond believes that he's been on the island for over 3 years. In the season 2 finale, not only does Locke tell Desmond that they crashed on 9/22/04, but Desmond sees it on the Pearl printout. If real world-island time was a 2:1 ratio, then Desmonf would have had to get to the island in 1998, in which case he would have something like, "what do you mean 9/22/04, it's only 2001. Even if it was a smaller ratio such as 1.5:1, there would still be a descrepancy.

2. On the day of the crash, Ben took Juliet to the Flame to show her video of her sister. He proved that it was current video by showing a newspaper dated 9/22/04.

Communication with the outside world really seems to throw a wrench into everything. If they are running on different times then they should be able to talk real time with the boat and Penny shouldn't have been able to talk real time with Charlie.

The other thing that I don't like about the theory that the leaving the island will spit you out where at the time you think you should be is that it gives the writers the ability to change the future.

Example: We'll say real world-island time is a 2:1 ratio. Jack spends 4 months, leaving in what he thinks is Jan of 2005. In the real world it is actually May, but the island spits him out in January. He lives two and a half years until we see his flashforward in the season 3 finale. On the island only 1 year and 3 months have passed. At this point we'll say whoever is left on the island gets off. Having been only 1 year and 3 months island time since Jack got off the island, these people are sent to April of 2006 creating of course a new off island future between 06 and 07 in which it's totally possible that Jack's life goes a different course and he doesn't end up the way we saw him in the finale. I don't want them to be able to change the future so I hope this isn't the way they go.
