The reason why Jack-2007 (Looking Glass) wanted to go back to the island is to use its time travel powers.
By doing this he can go back to September 22, 2004 - transport to Australia and stop Oceanic 815 from taking off and crashing.
Because this might piss off many LOST viewers, he will fail in his mission. The reason why he will fail is because his constant is in the casket.
