The answer must not be referring to Jacob then, because Jacob li[v]es in the statue's foot. Just joking. But no, not really. Who's going to "protect us" -- Jacob or Mr./Mrs Crocodile?

Also, "protect us" from whom? "Jacob's enemy"? The Crocodile Hunter?

Also, "protect" whom? We learned almost nothing about the statue tonight. I mean, who fucking built the thing? I want more LOST, damnit!

I've also seen it translated as "He who will save us."

contrivance, again. the question should be "who" not "what" lies in the shadow of the statue.

Shouldn't it actually be, "who lives in the foot of the statue?"

or

"Who cooks fish to the right of the statue?"

I've been reading the translation: "What we all serve"

Apparently it says...

"May the gods grant thee all that thy heart desires. May the gods grant thee happiness"

Pretty meaningless really.

I saw it as " May heaven grant you in all things your heart's desire." It's from The Odyssey.

The statue is the Egyptian God Sobek, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sobek even though a lot of people have been saying it's Anubis. My roomate and I looked it up, and it definitely looks like Sobek, same crocodile head... just a thought, who knows if it matters.:)

Fefe, I am on the Sobek boat too. Apparently there is a camp out there thinking it is a hippo headed god named Taweret, but I don't buy it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taweret

Maybe not so meaningless? Joshmeister just blogged about this. Interesting...

Paul, the first thing I thought of when reading that blog was "the magic box".

As far as the statue, I think Sobek fits the show better, but apparently Michael Emerson is on record that it's Tawaret.

420, Michael Emerson apparently came up with Tawaret based on his own research, so I am not sure if i trust his conclusion as canon just yet. Apparently D&C referred to the statue as a male god (i think it was in a recent official podcast but can not remember). Tawaret is a female and Sobek is a male...

Paul, thanks for the clarification on that. I wasn't sure why Emerson thought that. I really think it's Sobek.

Mmm I still stand by my statement that it's meaningless.
I mean sure it relates, but nothing new or interesting, seemingly.

And looks like the winner is Sobek. That mouth wasn"t Anubis.

That's stupid.
The statue looks exactly like Sobek, not Taweret.
But it looks like ABC has "confirmed" that it's Taweret. Dunno if that's considered official, but it would seem so.
Makes sense with the whole fertility thing they've got going on.

Just to clarify to C&J, it is Taweret, but that's the hippo who is the fertility god, not the crocodile. Dunno if you've corrected yourselves later in the podcast though.
