The Lost Lowdown

There were hints in this episode to suggest that Richard was from the black rock. But if that is true doesn't that make his character very unsympathetic? How are we supposed to root for someone who was involved in slave trade?

I thought the ship at the beginning was the Black Rock, the one Richard spotted from the shore.

What hints?

Richard annoyed me for the last two episodes, but I guess it turns out he had reason to be suspicious.
